This is something that happened to my brother, but it is so amazing I have to tell it. Something you should know first: my great-great grandfather Johann came over from Iceland at the turn of the century to start a new life and brought with him tales from his homeland of the “little people” (fairies) and protective spirits. Every generation of my family grew up hearing these stories, so we are all believers and feel we have had unexplained encounters with beings of this nature. My younger brother is especially sensitive and open-minded to this and has more encounters than anyone.
My great-grandfather Bjarni (Johann’s son) confided to my mother before he passed away about a protective spirit he’d had encounters with since he was a young boy. This spirit came to him in the shape of a young girl, with long blonde hair pulled back in braids, wearing a red and white gingham dress. She would appear to him only when he was alone, never when others were around, and she never spoke, she just sat quietly by him or played with a doll or ran and skipped around. He continued seeing her right up until his last days. Anyway, for some reason he had kept this to himself for his whole life, and only told someone (my mother) as he was nearing the end. My mother decided to keep it to herself as well, and only told us about it after my brother had this amazing experience.
My brother is a long-haul truck driver, and often drives for hours on end, many times he gets so tired he can barely see straight (not very safe, I know!). Anyway, one night he had to make a trip during a blizzard, and as the hours wore on he became so tired that his mind started to drift. Suddenly, he saw a young girl skipping across the road. He slammed on his brakes and when the truck stopped, he rushed out, thinking he’d hit her because he couldn’t see her anymore. He checked all around the truck but she was gone, not even footsteps in the snow to show she’d been there. He leaned over and started dry heaving, thinking how close he’d been to killing a little girl. In his shocked state, he didn’t think to question what a young girl, all alone, would be doing in the middle of nowhere.
As he was bent over he heard a rushing sound and looked up. Not even 10 feet away, a huge semi truck rushed by. Then he looked to his right and saw a stop sign, one he’d almost drove right through in his dazed sleep-deprived state. If he hadn’t stopped for this little girl, he would have died for sure in a fiery crash! When he told us this later, my mother turned white and started shaking. She asked what the little girl looked like. “Well, it was really weird, Mom. She wasn’t wearing any winter clothes, even in the middle of a blizzard. She just had on a red and white dress, and she had long blond braids.” We feel that our beloved grandpa sent his little friend to prevent my brother from dying before his time.
